February through March is a very exciting time for TCPS. Students from all grades work together researching and transforming our school to showcase the Big Event theme for the year. Some examples of past themes have been, Our Oceans in 2014, and Greek Mythology in 2013. The one thing we can’t do during the event is tell our parents about the theme, it is a surprise!
It starts as an assembly where the teachers tell us what theme we’re going to do and then we talk about it as a school. We share stories about past events to help the new kids understand what we will be doing, we ask questions about the topic, and we take an oath to keep the theme a secret. The second step for Big Event is brainstorming. We get into small groups with students from each grade. Then we brainstorm ideas for what we think should go inside each different room.
Researching and building the Big Event is the best part. The fun part is making the different items. Building the rooms is like building a house, you have to plan and research topics you don’t know about yet. The important part is that we learn new things. In the making of the Big Event the possibilities are endless; we get to work on research, writing, art, music, building, creating, problem solving and planning. No matter what, we have fun.
The best thing about Big Event is working with younger and older students. It takes a lot of patience and responsibility, but it is very special to get to work with new people.
When it is time for the actual Big Event we put on the Big Event shirts and we guide our parents through the rooms full of music, research, facts, and activities. It is amazing to see how much work we all do. This makes the Big Event special.
