SAN DIEGO STUDENTS REAP REWARDS FOR SCHOOL

San Diego, CA- February 23, 2010.  Solana Beach residents, Whitley and Douglas Ballard and Joey Bednar, recently participated in the Healthy Schools, Healthy Families Challenge, on behalf of their school: The Child's Primary School (TCPS) located in Clairemont.  After submitting a video and collage based on how to fight the cold and flu season, they were awarded for their creative work.  The prize?  The trio won $100 to put to good use for TCPS.

The contest was designed to create awareness for families in preparation for the cold and flu season.  "Plan. Prepare. Defend." was the tagline for this national campaign and students were encouraged to submit original and creative pieces of work related to this theme.
"I wanted to enter the contest because I thought it would be cool to help our school,” said Bednar on entering the Healthy Schools, Healthy Families Challenge.  Douglas Ballard added, “I had a lot of fun shooting and editing the video too!"  That video contributed to the $100 prize the three will share with TCPS.

Whitley, Douglas, and Joey met with their schools founders, Sherry Risch and Maggie Price, to discuss how the money should be spent.  Some ideas were discussed, including donating to charity, but they ultimately wanted to include the school community in their decision.  Plans to create and distribute a survey to fellow TCPS students and staff are in the works.
Executive Director of TCPS, Jim Price, explains, "It is great when our students are able to use the skills they are learning at school in order to bring attention to issues that affect them, their families, and their community."

Out of hundreds of entries, these three students kept their eyes on the prize and expressed their creativity about an important subject matter which created awareness for many and resulted in bettering their school community.
